Batgrl comment: Because of this I realized there was yet another book I needed to have on my reading list!
We now return you to the following reblog:
I salute Allende for her efforts to teach Watauga county something about literature and democracy. I'm not optimistic, though. When the County Commissioners think they need to start interfering in book selection it is unlikely that the situation will become less heated.
Where do people get the bizarre notion that the purpose of literature is support an individual parent's personal beliefs? If you don't want your child to read a book, then take the teacher up on the replacement book. It's public education: no one individual gets to decide the curriculum for every kid. And also, I'm always terribly annoyed when people use big words like "pornographic" when they clearly don't know what they mean.
